Alpi vs the agent frameworks — a fair comparison

Where Alpi sits next to LangGraph, CrewAI, and the vendor SDKs. Frameworks build agent flows; SDKs use one model; Alpi operates persistent local agents as an organization.

There is a clean way to say where Alpi sits in the agent market:

Frameworks make it easy to build agent flows. Vendor SDKs make it easy to use one vendor's model. Alpi makes it easy to operate persistent local agents as an organization.

This is not an argument that the alternatives lack primitives — LangGraph in particular has excellent ones. It is an argument that the product boundary is different. This post lays the comparison out honestly, including where the alternatives win.

Snapshot: mid-2026. LangGraph 1.x has durable execution, checkpointers, stores, interrupts, and a mature observability/deployment product in LangSmith. Alpi has the local-operations and retrieval surface in its changelog. Both are real; they are aimed at different jobs.

The work is different

A demo agent flow usually needs a model call, a tool call, a graph, and a little state. An operating organization of agents needs more: persistent identities; per-agent memory and workspace; per-profile model and tool policy; coordination between agents; durable outputs; human-visible progress; retries and recovery for stuck turns; searchable history; notifications; local security boundaries; and an audit trail good enough to debug unattended work.

LangGraph gives you powerful primitives for graph state, durability, retries, and human-in-the-loop. Alpi is designed around the second list as its product surface — the daemon, profiles, apps, workgroups, logs, and local storage ship together.

Where LangChain stays useful: as an implementation detail behind a profile or skill — a deterministic extraction pipeline, a bounded domain graph, an existing codebase. LangChain can be a tool that an Alpi profile runs. It just shouldn't be the central runtime.

The rest of the field

They charge for different things

This matters more than any single number: frameworks charge for developer tooling (seats, traces, deployments). Vendor SDKs charge for tokens. Alpi charges for installed agents — productive profiles in production, no seats, no traces, no usage metering, no telemetry.

A blog post is not a price sheet, so the honest summary is the shape, not the rate card: the framework route is cheapest when you have few agents and your own platform-engineering team to build identity, budgets, governance, and operator apps on top — call it six to twelve engineering-months, plus ongoing maintenance. The platform route trades that build for a per-agent license whose cost follows adoption rather than headcount. Which is cheaper depends entirely on whether you want more builders or more operators.

A concrete case: the Web Factory

The clearest way to see the difference is a real deployment shape. Picture a hospitality-tech organization with a web team maintaining roughly a thousand hotel sites, adding a hundred-plus a year. The thesis: a hotel site is ~80% configuration, ~20% custom. So eleven agents — intake, copywriting, localization, build, QA, SEO, brand, PM, tech lead, visual fallback, strategy — produce only validated, typed data; the design layer is a handful of fixed themes. One persistent workgroup per hotel runs the pipeline:

The graph above is the easy part. Production is the rest of the questions: Who is the quill agent between runs? Where does each agent keep its memory? How does a human pause the factory? Where does a failed QA output show up? How does a phone notification link back to the result? How do you search old workgroup decisions? What happens when a model call stalls for ten minutes? Who wrote which file? In Alpi these are first-class runtime concerns. On a framework, each is application code somebody has to write and maintain.

The economics follow from that. When agents absorb the templated work — layout, copy, translation, publishing — and a smaller human team supervises, validates, and improves the output, the platform license lands at a low single-digit percentage of the operating cost it displaces. (These are directional scenarios from a reference deployment, not guarantees — and the honest reading still holds: at very low agent counts with an in-house platform team, raw framework tooling is cheaper.)

What makes the case generalize is that the next domain — contact center, finance intake, marketing operations — is approached the same way: measure, validate, then scale. Same platform, same agent pattern, different skills.

Positioning

Alpi shouldn't try to be a better LangChain — that's a framework race it doesn't want to win. The stronger claim is the honest one:

Frameworks are for developers building agent flows. Vendor SDKs are for betting on one model vendor. Alpi is for organizations that operate persistent local agents — and that can walk away with everything they built.
